The Big Painting Challenge

'Skinhead Moonstomp' 20x50cm acrylic and mixed media on box canvas.

Over the past couple of Sundays I have been watching The Big Painting Challenge (BBC1 Sunday 6pm). It really made me want to do the tasks they are set, and also made me think quite allot about my artwork.

Anyway, a long story short, inspired by Jennifer in particular on the programme and many of the comments by the mentors I decided this week was as good as any to have a bash at being rather more loose and experimental, a stark contrast to the technical skills needed to produce the chrome and highly detailed paintings I usual do.

I used a variety of methods to produce the background, aiming for a similar aged feel to my usual paintings but with a less polished finish. I didn't draw at all, instead choosing to stand to paint, and use long handled brushes to block in colour to start and work from there.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, standing also lets me dance whilst I paint....which I just love! Its been a bit fumbly at times, gaining confidence all the way through to enjoy and experiment with colour much more than my usual style allows for. I absolutely LOVE the finished piece, although have not quite decided what to do with it as yet.

I don't know whether it will be well received or not, whether or not it would sell, but I do want to make sure its not a fluke that I ended up with that result, so another tomorrow...and I can't wait to get up and get going. This morning I woke at 5.34 am and wanted to get in the studio! So tomorrow I paint, hopefully with a little more confidence in where I want it to be and how, less talking myself out of it, as its been like being let out of a cage the experience of painting this.

Whether its a style I will continue, or whether just a mini series of 3, I am unsure yet, time will tell I guess! Further photographs here. KTF xxx
